A Course in Miracles:  Lesson 205


Peace comes to those who want it.  In crowd, on a busy street; in a contentious office meeting; in a roomful of screaming kids; or standing alone at the end of an empty pier, peace is found in the inside space of a quiet mind that knows it has a choice.  Do I believe this world defines who and what I am?  Or, in this very moment, can I choose another way? 


This world thrives on lack of peace.  There is a force here that is sustained only if you never awaken to the fact you have a choice.  It wants you always reacting, always thinking, in a state of chronic, low-grade fear.  Read the news and believe in it.  Listen to the politicians and think we must accept one of their versions of the future.  Hope against hope that you will be among those whose lives are not touched by violence.   This world would have you believe that peace consists of a few stolen moments that come and go and leave you waiting until the next one might appear. 

Peace is here, but it lies hidden in the quiet.  Peace is something we must decide for ourselves and cultivate within for in any moment, we choose where to put our focus.


A focus on peace is not passive.  A focus on peace requires becoming an active witness to my world, all the time.  And when I move from a place of peace, I am far more powerful than when I react from fear.   When I move from a place of peace, I have the whole universe at my back.  I am in flow with it.  I am embracing it.  And the universe knows it. 


Today’s practice is another lesson in mind training.  If you’ve been reading these blogs you know that A Course has taken us up a step.  Practicing has now become a form of daily contemplation.    On the hour we repeat the central idea, “I am not a body.  I am free.  For I am still as God created me.”  Just take a break from whatever you are doing and repeat the lesson quietly in your mind.  Do this on the hour, every hour, if you can.


On the half-hour, repeat today’s lesson, “I want the peace of God.”  This doesn’t have to be a big thing.  Just recognize the feeling in your heart.  The purpose is to detach from the world for just a minute.  Step out of your mind and go within to recharge your spiritual battery.  Connect with the universe and feel its silent power.


Give yourself also the gift of quiet contemplation in the morning and evening.  Take a seat and get comfortable.  Place gentle awareness on the breath.  When you are ready, repeat the day’s thoughts in your mind.  Then forget about everything you know or think you should know.  Forget all you’ve learned from A Course in Miracles.  Let your mind sink deeply into peace.  Watch the thoughts and feelings that arise.  Let them all come and go.  Ask for help if you need to.  It is there, waiting to be asked.
