A Course in Miracles: Lesson 183
Today’s lesson is: I call upon God’s Name and on my own.”
Today I want to write a little bit about time. We have passed the halfway mark in the Lesson Book and it is important to understand the concept of time as we go forward.
Simply put, A Course tells us our concept of linear time is an illusion, created by the split mind of ego. The ego invests itself heavily in the past, for it is the past that the ego uses to ensure its own future. The idea of NOW has no meaning to the ego because it cannot free the present moment from the past. The ego sees the present only as a continuation of the past, with all its attributes of pain and regret. Therefore all ego reactions to people, places, things, and events are dictated by a past reference point that the ego views as unchangeable. For this simple, yet profound reason, we never see things as they are, but we see them only as they are NOT.
Consider this: we consider it “natural” to use our past experience as the reference point from which we judge the present. Yet this practice is unnatural because it is delusional. To use the past as a reference for the NOW is to cast a shadow on the only moment that is freely available and that is real. Not only do we carry our past forward into the moment of NOW, but we also use past experience to predict all future moments. Thus we ensure a future world that is also delusional. What we call the future is nothing more than a projection of past events, which we call real but are not and never can be.
The ego’s thought system of past and future separates us from each other and from the NOW, which is the only reality. To be “born again” is to let the past go, and look without condemnation upon the present. Judgment and condemnation are things I bring forward with me, in MY MIND. The only freedom we can find in this world comes from releasing the past over and over again. This is the place miracles are found. The NOW is the ONLY place miracles are found.
Today we practice being in the present moment by calling upon Source, or God, or whatever you wish to call All That Is. The name of God is also your name, and it is mine. We are created by One to be One with One. It is right and true to say that God is in everything. And it is right and true to say we connect with Source only in the NOW because Source cares not about the past or future. Source IS NOW.
Practice today for 15 minutes. Give yourself the gift of silence and let the idea of God become the all-encompassing thought in your mind. Take your seat and get comfortable. Place your attention on the breath and quiet your mind. When you are ready, say in your mind, “I call upon God’s Name and on my own.”
Your name and my name are the same as God’s. God’s name is Wholeness (or holiness) and so is ours. It cannot be called upon without response. As you sit, repeat God’s name slowly over and over. Feel the idea behind the name. Anchor yourself in the idea of Oneness in the NOW moment. If your mind wanders (and it will) go back to the breath and begin again. This is a prayer like none other. It is a direct, moment-to-moment connection with something far larger than you can even imagine. God is in you. You are in God. Who is the God in me? What does God within me feel like? These are not arrogant questions – they are the searchings of an intelligent mind.
When you have sat in silence for 15 minutes or so, arise and go about the day. But practice mindfulness today by calling upon Source, or God, in all things as often as you can. Stop often and invite God into the NOW, for is the only real moment you have.
Much peace to you today dear reader.
