A Course in Miracles: Lesson 364
A major emphasis of A Course in Miracles is that the body is NOT what we are. The material body is immaterial consciousness projected into form. Immaterial mind creates the dense physical. Quantum physics is all but screaming this revolutionary truth. Why have we not caught on?
We have not caught on because we have been conditioned since birth to accept the assumption that we are physical creatures – biological machines with brains. Generation after generation has passed down the undisputed conclusion that we are our bodies. The mass media, family, friends, our culture reinforce the idea that the body is our only meaningful reality.
As we grow up, the indoctrination increases. We are taught to be concerned with how the body is dressed, if it is healthy, how it should be housed. We reward those with beautiful bodies. We set standards for gender, color, height, and weight. We are consumed with fear of illness and disease. We literally spend every waking hour in service to the body and its perceived needs.
Eventually we are taught a few metaphysical concepts in the form of religious beliefs. In stories we are told that we possess a soul of some kind, but it is inaccessible to us. We become convinced of our powerlessness when it comes to knowing the answers to the mysteries of our existence and life. Science has some clues, but scientists have also been indoctrinated with the idea that we are bodies and the brain is center of all thought. Scientists are often the most intractable proponents of body-centrism.
There is only one problem with our conclusions about the body – they are built entirely upon the limited range of our physical senses. The physical senses are not the right tools for exploration of immaterial form. We know reality extends far beyond our ability to see it. Yet we continue to search the physical universe for truths about what is not physical!
The mind is the only tool we have to explore the immaterial reality from which all form is derived. We must go inside to discover where the outside comes from. This is why A Course in Miracles emphasizes we are not the body. And it is why we are asked over and over again to give up thinking with the physical brain and begin to experience knowing itself.
The experience of knowing requires us to let go of control. Yet letting go is the last thing the body wants to do. This is why the final lesson of the Workbook asks us to give each moment to Source – which is the immaterial Mind from which we all arise.
“This holy instant would I give to You.
Be You in charge. For I would follow You,
Certain that Your direction gives me peace.”
This lesson uses old language to convey a revolutionary idea: we are immaterial consciousness connected with higher Mind. This connection comes in the instances we release bodily fear and allow the moment of experience to be itself.
We are an aspect of MIND of GOD having the experience of form. We are not the form itself. Furthermore, the more we connect with Source, the more we become like Source. This is how immaterial evolves in the material. But it requires us to consciously undo the unconscious indoctrination we have inherited.
Tomorrow is the last lesson of the year. We will end as we began, by taking a seat and looking around the room. What do we see? Physical form. By now you know where I’m going with this……
Many holy instances to you today, dear reader.
