A Course in Miracles: Lesson 355
All of creation is free and without limit. If we imagine (as we do) that there are any limits at all, we are incorrect. The Word is God. The Word is all of creation and it is what we ARE.
Now, I have never experienced limitless creation. But believe I am WORD of God. I have chosen my identity because I am free to do so. I am also free to remain undecided about myself and have the experience of not knowing. It’s all good. It doesn’t change a thing.
But when I choose, I begin to sing a different song. I begin to know myself in new ways. As Paul Selig says, “I know who I am. I know what I am. I know how I serve.”
What am I? I am Word of God in form. And I am in service to Word through my willingness to know my Self. I am claiming my inheritance as the one who may choose in freedom and without limit. That is what I am.
“There is no end to all the peace and joy,
And all the miracles that I will give,
When I accept God’s Word. “
What do these words mean? Personally, they do not appeal much to me. The language feels a little fundamental. “No end to peace and joy.” What is that? It seems impossible on the face of it. It makes me want to go back into the cave and write on the walls all of the reasons why love is impossible in this world. Well… that’s an option and it’s one I’ve taken very sincerely many times.
But one day, I looked in the mirror and saw how bruised my forehead had become. I decide to stop hitting it against the wall of the cave. I tried forgiving myself (and a few other guilty compatriots) and glimmer of light appeared. Something inside me opened up. I liked the feeling. I saw things I hadn’t seen before and I kept watching.
As I watched, I noticed even more. I asked for help. I figured I COULD ask. Then a few other people (thank you Sally and John and Jane and Beth and too many others to name here) showed up. I began to sing a new song. The song was this: “I know who I am in love, what I am in love, and how I serve in love.” I claimed myself worthy for the first time. Not as an intellectual. Not as a professional this or that. Not as a mom or a daughter or a wife. But as me - a spirit seeking reconnection with itself through love.
It would be untrue to say there is no end to all the peace and joy in my life. I still go back to the cave and write on the walls. But I know now there is an opening, and it is light, and there are others out there waiting for me to return. And when they go into the cave and begin to write, I am standing outside in the light waiting for them to come out. This is how we all serve. We stand outside the mouth of the cave, steadfast, with each other. We wait. We keep the lights on. We know who we are. We know what we are. We know how we serve. All of us, all together, all the time – free without limit. I’m pretty sure that’s the miracle.
