A Course in Miracles: Lesson 354
If you have children home from college you may have noticed that food disappears fast. Things you love to eat and have saved for special moments are simply gone when you go looking for them. “What happened to the Cheez-Its?” I asked myself this very morning.
This oneness thing takes practice. We are so trained not to see it and even when we do, it takes so little to lose its peace. “Those Cheez-Its were MINE!” screamed my little ego! The truths of oneness become apparent only after you’ve tried everything else.
The words of today’s lesson establish us as One, wholly free, and beyond time. We have no self except the one that is together with all other selves in Mind of Source.
“We stand together, Christ and I, in peace
And certainty of purpose. And in Him
Is His Creator, as He is in me.”
As Christmas approaches, the Workbook reminds us that the purpose of Christmas is the celebration of oneness. It is not a birthday party. What we love about this time year isn’t the crass commercialism of gift giving. In fact, the pressure of decorating and buying stuff needs to go away. What asks for more attention is the fact that between Thanksgiving and Christmas, there is a respite of the heart. We take time to honor something sweet and ephemeral – our togetherness as family, a community, a world. Being Christian isn’t the point. It’s being human or not even human, but being souls together, having this shared human experience.
We can lose sight of oneness but we cannot make it unreal. In fact it is the one thing that IS real. Its expression is lasting and deep. We know it when we experience it. We love it because it feels good and what feels good is a pointer toward truth.
“The world you see is based on “sacrifice” of oneness. It is a picture of complete disunity and total lack of joining. Around each entity is built a wall so seeming solid that it looks as if what is inside can never reach without, and what is out can never reach and join with what is locked away within the wall. Each part must sacrifice the other part, to keep itself complete. For if they joined each one would lose its own identity, and by their separation are their selves maintained.”
“By their separation are the selves maintained.” We have known our selves only as separate. But the walls so seeming solid are coming down. This world is full of turmoil BECAUSE they are coming down. Some would have the walls remain, but many others are reaching up and pulling out the mortar.
The truth of shared reality requires no loss. In truth, there are Cheez-Its enough for everyone!
